Ratu Eceng: Transforming Weeds into Eco-Friendly Handicrafts in Kunciran Jaya

Wednesday, 30 July 2025 - In the growing wave of local entrepreneurship, Ratu Eceng stands out as one of the most inspiring micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Kunciran Jaya, Tangerang. This innovative business has proven that even unwanted plants like water hyacinths can be turned into beautiful, valuable, and sustainable products.

Ratu Eceng specializes in crafting handmade products from water hyacinth, a plant often regarded as an invasive weed. Through creativity and skilled hands, the artisans of Ratu Eceng transform this natural material into a wide variety of woven products, such as bags, wallets, flower vases, tissue boxes, sandals, wall decorations, and photo frames.

Each item is carefully crafted using traditional techniques, ensuring not only high quality but also uniqueness in every piece. The eco-friendly aspect, combined with aesthetic appeal, makes Ratu Eceng’s products increasingly popular not just locally, but also among customers outside the region.

More than just a business, Ratu Eceng empowers the local community by involving women—especially housewives—in training programs and production activities. This initiative provides both skills and additional income for families in the neighborhood.

By focusing on recycling, sustainability, and community development, Ratu Eceng has become a role model for how small businesses can make a big impact. Their work is a testament to the idea that local resources, no matter how overlooked, can be turned into economic opportunities when approached with creativity and care.

As Ratu Eceng continues to grow, it carries the hope of inspiring more MSMEs across Indonesia to embrace sustainability and social responsibility. Truly, Ratu Eceng is more than just a business—it’s a movement rooted in nature, community, and innovation.
